Hello everyone,
Welcome the The Rubric Rundown, where we give a quick recap of some of the things you may have missed this week and offer a brief glimpse into what’s to come.
Not Our First Article, But Certainly Our Most Popular
We knew you all loved Fr. Kelly, but my goodness! This past Monday our profile on the man in black himself was the first of our posts to email out to our loyal subscribers - and boy did it make the rounds! We were completely overwhelmed by the positive response from our community and remain honored to have been able to showcase the wonderful things Fr. Kelly is doing in his parishes.
If you missed it the first time around, it’s worth a read.
If you like reverent liturgies, selfless leadership, and country music, maybe you should come on down to Oran or Chaffee on Sunday mornings and see what all the fuss is about. We sure are thankful for all the work Fr. Kelly has done and look forward to more to come.
Since our community loved this profile so much, be on the lookout for more familiar faces soon!
Ad Orientem
Our most recent article features an interview with Fr. Brian Straus, pastor at Saint Peter the Apostle in Joplin. During this year of Eucharistic revival, you may have noticed some priests returning to the practice of ad orientem.
Read on to learn more about this ancient practice.
From the Pulpit
A quick tour around The Rubric will reveal many great articles and reflections you may not have seen just yet. We’re trying not to overwhelm your email inbox, so we’ve been quietly uploading all kinds of great stuff.
Fr. Allen Kirchner, the chaplain of this apostolate, has graciously agreed to send us his homilies for each Sunday so we can pass them along to our readers. His most recent sermon encourages us to “be not afraid” when stepping out of the boat. You can read that here. Check back every Saturday evening for weekend homilies from Fr. Allen and, hopefully, from more of your favorite priests in the future!

So Many Choices, So Little Time
This week we launch into a new series on Catholic Bioethics written by Dr. Nicole Allcock. Nicole received her Pharm.D. from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2002 and M.S. in health care ethics from the University of Mary and the National Catholic Bioethics Center in 2020. She is a Fellow of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and the National Catholic Bioethics Center. Dr. Allcock has practiced as a critical care pharmacist and a hospital pharmacy administrator… and somehow we got her to write for us!
The multi-part series is called “Choices” and launches this Monday, so keep an eye on those emails folks.
Novena to St. Pius X
St. Pius X, patron of the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau and our patron here at The Rubric, celebrates his feast day this Monday, August 21st. We thank all of you who have been praying with us and humbly request you continue to keep us in your prayers - Lord knows we need all we can get!
If you don’t know much about St. Pius X or are just hungry for a little more prayer in your day-to-day, check out our Novena prayers.

This really isn’t a comment. I have a question. I’m Fr. John Braun, a retired priest in the Diocese of Springfield Cape-Girardeau with an interest in writing. Would I be able to submit articles to you? If so, how?
